Born in Nanaimo and based in Montreal, this alto saxophonist and composer is finally getting international recognition for her ambitious, beautiful compositions for big band. It’s possible to study harmony and orchestration, but an ear for melody can’t really be taught. Jensen’s got that melodic gift, and the endlessly unspooling melodic lines in her compositions give her music a memorable emotional resonance. Jensen’s music often features her sister, Ingrid Jensen, who’s well established in the U.S. as one of today’s leading trumpet players.
