Mehdi Boumalki

Mehdi Boumalki launched his acting career in Morocco after graduating from the Casablanca Conservatory. His passion for theatre soon led him and his classmates to form a theatre company that has produced a number of politically and socially engaged plays, tackling such hot-button issues as the persistent injustices against women in Moroccan society. Mehdi considers his artistic commitment as a means of raising awareness and combating these injustices, as demonstrated by his work with the Kabareh Chikhate troupe, in which eleven male actors disguised themselves as women to sing in memory of the women of yesteryear, known as chikhates, who fought for freedom of speech, even if they are poorly regarded today.

Notable projects in France include Roméo et Juliette directed by Anne-Laure Liégeois, and an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Galilée directed by Frédéric Maragnani. Through these experiences, he developed his range of artistic expression by exploring different contexts and questioning the world around him.

In 2020, Mehdi made a major career move to Montréal, where he began training at the École supérieure de théâtre at UQAM. This new stage in his professional life has allowed him to explore new artistic approaches. He now wants to put what he has learned into practice by participating in a wide range of projects while continuing to be involved in artistic initiatives that denounce injustice, whether through theatre or other artistic avenues.
