Go Fishing activity and Water-Tasting station with Ottawa Riverkeeper

Protecting the health of the Ottawa River watershed is at the heart of the work of Ottawa Riverkeeper. Curious minds of all ages will discover the wonders of the watershed through a Go Fishing game to uncover the rich biodiversity surrounding us.
Thirsty from all the fun? The Ottawa Riverkeeper will also have a water-tasting station on hand. Do you prefer river water from the tap? Bottled water? Groundwater from a well? Let’s find out and think about how to work together to protect water for all!

Indigenous language colouring pages

All Day
The NAC's Indigenous Theatre Department will share colouring pages with water-themed Indigenous words from across Turtle Island featuring artwork created by Indigenous artists from the regions where these languages are spoken. Join us in colouring these pages and share your work!

For inspiration, this station will also feature a small display of materials on the legendary Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau. Thanks to the Norval Morriseau Estate for their support.

Reflections H2O

All Day
Help create a collective artwork that explores the hexagonal pattern in nature and the molecular structure of water, led by artist and educator Emily Rose Michaud.

Note that participating children ages 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Navigating Tides

10:30 am, 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm - Peter Herrndorf Place
Through music and movement, Navigating Tides explores our relationship with water and our connection to the Earth. Created and performed by Kathryn Cobbler and Elizabeth Emond-Stevenson, this 30-minute “choo“e your own adventure” wor” for strings and dance is an interactive performance that invites audience members to explore how we can create positive or negative change through our actions. Participants can make choices that affect the artistic storyline – mirroring the cause and effect of our decisions and showing that how we interact with water can either heal or erode the Earth.

September 4, 2024 A host of family activities will be offered on September 14 and 15 as part of the SPHERE Festival, including Navigating Tides, an interactive performance that uses music and movement to explore our relationship with water and our connection to the Earth’s ecosystem. Featuring Emily Rose Michaud

Emily Rose Michaud is an interdisciplinary artist and educator working at the crossroads of community organization, ecology and civic participation. Her body of work encompasses land-based art, installation, drawing, writing, performance and intervention. Emily has been leading art workshops independently since 2004, and offers workshops in and out of institutional settings. A certified teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers, in 2019 she became a member of the Multicultural Arts for School & Communities (MASC) and of the English Language Arts Network (ELAN)’s Artists Inspire program. Emily has worked with youngsters, teenagers, adults and seniors in all media, for leisure, education and portfolio development. She is fluent in English and French and works in a variety of settings on both sides of the river throughout the National Capital Region.

Emily’s workshops are designed to meet the specific needs of groups, their interests, skills and talents. Media used include painting, drawing, mixed media, land art, and projects for public spaces. You can view her most recent workshop offerings here: Programs + Newsletter.

Emily Rose Michaud est une artiste et éducatrice interdisciplinaire qui travaille au carrefour de l’organisation communautaire, de l’écologie et de la participation civique. Son travail englobe l’art terrestre, l’installation, le dessin, l’écriture et la performance/intervention. Depuis 2004, Emily propose des ateliers d’art de manière indépendante, et offre des ateliers dans et hors de l’institution. En 2019, elle est devenue membre du Multicultural Arts for School & Communities (MASC), du programme Artists Inspire du réseau English Language Arts Network (ELAN). Elle a travaillé avec des jeunes, des adolescents, des adultes et des personnes âgées dans tous les médias, pour les loisirs, l’éducation et le développement de portefeuille. Featuring Kathryn Patricia Cobbler

Hailing from Canada’s Capital region, Loop pedal violist, visual artist, composer, and educator Kathryn Patricia Cobbler has crafted a singular niche in music improvisation and classical performance. She obsesses over creating uniquely arresting soundscapes, whether in solo recitals, composing and performing for art installations, and more. Named a CBC Trailblazer in 2021 and a recipient of one of Ottawa Arts Council’s Emerging Artist awards, she has been featured in Canada’s most notable Concert Series, Chamberfest, Music and Beyond, NUMUS Concert series to name a few.

Named one of '3 Classical Musicians You Should Know ' in 2022, by SHIFTER Magazine and the NAC, Kathryn is a seasoned performer, speaker, presenter and workshop facilitator. As a performing artist and educator, Ms. Cobbler is a performance instructor at Carleton University and an artist on the MASC Artist roster. As a composer, Kathryn has been featured in the Boston based Concert series, Castle of Our Skin’s Black Composers Miniature Challenge, which resulted in the world premier of her piece A Home Called ‘Wander’ for solo viola and spoken word. Most recently, Kathryn Patricia was commissioned by the National Art Gallery of Canada to compose a piece of music for their exhibit, Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment.

Kathryn Patricia Cobbler holds degrees in viola performance from Western University (B.M.) the University of Ottawa (M.M.) and was a 2022 fellow of the Global Leaders Institute. She is currently a PhD student in Critical Studies in Improvisation through the University of Guelph. Kathryn Patricia performs on a viola by luthier Sibylle Ruppert and a Boss RC-30 loop pedal.

Originaire de la région de la capitale nationale, Kathryn Patricia Cobbler est une altiste spécialiste de la pédale de boucle, artiste visuelle, compositrice et pédagogue qui s’est taillé une place dans le monde de l’improvisation musicale et de l’interprétation classique. Elle crée méticuleusement des environnements sonores uniques des plus frappants aussi bien pour des récitals solos que pour la scène et les installations artistiques dans lesquelles elle se produit. Reconnue en 2021 par CBC comme une artiste pionnière, elle a reçu un prix pour les artistes émergents décerné par le Conseil des arts d’Ottawa. On a pu la voir dans diverses séries de concerts au Canada, notamment au Chamberfest, au festival Musique et autres mondes, ou encore au NUMUS.

Nommée en 2022 par le magazine SHIFTER et le CNA comme l’une des « trois musiciennes classiques à suivre », Kathryn Patricia Cobbler est une interprète, conférencière, oratrice et animatrice d’ateliers aguerrie. Elle fait également partie du corps professoral en interprétation à l’Université Carleton et des artistes de MASC. Ses compositions ont été présentées dans le cadre d’une série de concerts donnés à Boston sous l’égide de Castle of Our Skin, où sa pièce A Home Called ‘Wander’ pour alto solo et poésie orale a été jouée pour la première fois. Le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada lui a récemment commandé une œuvre musicale pour son exposition intitulée Sans invitation : les artistes canadiennes de la modernité.

Through her work in inclusive dance, cross-disciplinary collaboration and broad learning from multiple perspectives, Elizabeth has sought to redefine what dance looks and feels like for herself, and to allow space for others to do so as well.

An independent franco-ontarian dance artist from traditional unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe territory (Orléans ON), she creates/performs/collaborates through connections between people/places/artforms from accessible, intersectional feminist perspectives. An alumni of the Quinte Ballet School, The School of Dance, DecidedlyJazz Danceworks’ Professional Training Program and the Banff Centre for the Arts, Elizabeth has also trained extensively in inclusive dance techniques/teaching through Propeller Dance, Candoco (UK), AXIS Dance Company (US) and Stopgap Dance Company (UK). She was mentored by Tedd Robinson from 2021-2022.

Elizabeth is currently entering her fifth season as a company dancer for Propeller Dance, working on a project with 10 Gates Dancing and was commissioned by Ottawa Dance Directive to create a new duet for their Series Dance 10 in September 2023. She is a member of multidisciplinary group Ghost Rooster Collective, supported by Canada Council of the Arts, the City of Ottawa and Digital Arts Resource Centre. She creates dance works, films and interdisciplinary collaborations that have been supported/commissioned by a wide range of organizations and arts councils, including the National Arts Centre, CPAMO, TACTICS, Théâtre Wakefield, Theatre 4.669, Dark Horse Dance Projects, Ottawa Dance Directive, Free Flow Dance Theatre, Dancers Studio West, Lisbon Dance Platform (Portugal), Skylines Dance & Film Series, HUFF Festival, NextFest and Social Distancing Festival, the City of Ottawa, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council and Bourse Tontine.

Her community practice includes working with Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre, the City of Ottawa, creating and co-facilitating Conversations, a discussion series for and by Ottawa-Gatineau dance artists, and INTERFACE, a research intensive for emerging Adawe-area dance artists. Elizabeth has danced for Ottawa Dance Directive, Allison Burns, Lois Chan, Kaja Irwin, Shara Weaver, Chelsea Passmore, Par B.L.eux, Corps Bara Dance Theatre, Pixie Cram/Tina Le Moine, Tara Luz Danse and The Ghomeshi Effect, among others. She has served as rehearsal director/outside eye for Propeller Dance and Allison Burns.

Featuring Rachel Gray

Rachel Gray is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist based in Algonquin Territory/Ottawa. Navigating the world with Dyslexia has led her to explore art as a way to create customized language. Through drawing, performance, installation, and storytelling she tries to speak into the places language leaves blank. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Rachel is also an author, animator, and illustrator, with her graphic novel "Jess" adapted into a musical work commissioned by Pacific Opera Victoria. She is the librettist and co-creator of Raccoon Opera, premiering at Salle Bourgie in Montreal in spring of 2024.

Rachel is also the producer of SPEAK Podcast which shares the voices and stories of artists with developmental disabilities through audio art, music and a model of production that centres co-leadership and accessibility. Rachel is a founding member of Ghost Rooster, a disability arts collective at the intersection of dance, visual art and audio storytelling.

Rachel Gray est une artiste interdisciplinaire canadienne qui vit sur le territoire algonquin, à Ottawa. Observant le monde à travers le prisme de la dyslexie, elle utilise l’art pour créer un langage qui lui est propre. Par le dessin, la performance, l’installation et le récit, elle essaie de s’exprimer dans les espaces que le langage laisse vides. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans le monde entier. Elle est également auteure, animatrice et illustratrice; son roman graphique Jess a été adapté en œuvre musicale (commande du Pacific Opera Victoria). Elle est la librettiste et la co-créatrice de Raccoon Opera, qui a été présenté à la Salle Bourgie à Montréal en mai 2024.

Rachel Gray est aussi la productrice du balado SPEAK qui cultive le co-leadership et l’accessibilité. Elle y fait entendre les voix et les histoires d’artistes souffrant de troubles du développement en misant sur l’art audio et la musique. Elle est membre fondatrice de Ghost Rooster, un collectif d’artistes en situation de handicap à la croisée de la danse, de l’art visuel et du récit audio.

Dancer, choreographer and teacher, Siôned is a vibrant member of the Canadian dance community. Siôned Watkins brings over 20 years of professional dance experience to her movement teachings. After graduating from Les Atelier de danse de Montréal, she began dancing for various Montréal dance companies including 10 years of international touring with Danièle Desnoyers' company, Le Carré Des Lombes. After studying and training in a myriad of movement methodologies, Siôned was introduced to Gyrokinesis® in 2007 during a residency in Banff with Dana Gingras and thus began her journey to becoming a certified and licensed Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® instructor. Also an Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) practitioner, Siôned is dedicated to sharing these modalities with professionals, teachers and students alike. She has taught at École De Danse De Montréal, UQAM, Concordia University, Université d'Ottawa, School of Dance and Ottawa Dance Directive. Siôned is the Dance Education Associate and Teaching Artist for the National Arts Centre.

Interprète, chorégraphe et enseignante, Siôned joue un rôle dynamique au sein de la communauté de la danse au Canada. Experte dans lʼart du mouvement, Siôned Watkins a plus de 20 ans dʼexpérience dans le domaine de la danse professionnelle. Après avoir obtenu un diplôme des Ateliers de danse moderne de Montréal, elle a dansé pour plusieurs compagnies de danses montréalaises, notamment Le Carré des Lombes de Danièle Desnoyers, avec lequel elle sʼest produite en tournée à lʼéchelle mondiale pendant dix ans. En 2007, alors quʼelle était en résidence à Banff, elle a découvert la Gyrokinésis®, qui est venue complémenter une formation riche en méthodologies du mouvement. Elle poursuit dès lors un certificat en Gyrotonic® et en Gyrokinésis®. Spécialiste de lʼétirement isolé actif (EIA), elle sʼest engagée à partager son enseignement aussi bien avec des professionnels quʼavec des étudiants, notamment à lʼÉcole de danse contemporaine de Montréal, à lʼUniversité du Québec à Montréal, à Concordia, à la School of Dance, au Centre de danse contemporaine à Ottawa et lʼUniversité dʼOttawa. Elle et associée en éducation et artiste enseignante de la Danse au Centre national des Arts.

Liz Winkelaar is Artistic Associate and dancer with the integrated dance company, Propeller Dance. She has studied Gyrokinesis with Siôned Watkins here in Ottawa and with Dana Gingras in Montreal. She is happy to share a movement practice that has enhanced both her dancing and her general well-being.

Liz Winkelaar est associée artistique et danseuse au sein de la compagnie de danse intégrée Propeller Dance. Elle a étudié la Gyrokinesis avec Siôned Watkins ici à Ottawa et avec Dana Gingras à Montréal. Elle est heureuse de partager une pratique de mouvement qui a amélioré ses habiletés de danse et son bien-être général.
