Irresistible Neighbourhoods

Imagining hopeful futures

Irresistible Neighbourhoods is a multi-year radio play development project centered on themes of climate and sustainability, which nurtures both emerging and established playwrights to imagine alternative visions for the neighbourhoods they call home.

Seeking to contrast the predominance of dystopian climate narratives, which ring alarm bells about the state of our planet but often leave audiences paralyzed with despair, Irresistible Neighbourhoods encourages commissioned artists to ask ‘what if?’ instead. Guided by bespoke dramaturgical teams addressing different aspects of the work, the artists are asked to bring the full scope of their imaginations to the task, offering audiences more hopeful visions of what our lives might be like as we move closer to the ecological transition. This project reconsiders the role of the artist in the climate crisis, not as a communicator of climate imperatives, but rather as an agent of imagination, gently cultivating a shift in the fundamental values underpinning our relationship with the natural world.

The project was conceived by Artistic Director Nina Lee Aquino in collaboration with Judi Pearl, Associate Producer, Artistic Programming and Environmental Projects, bringing together Nina’s commitment to new play development with Judi’s work on artistic approaches to environmental sustainability.

Artistic Director, English Theatre Nina Lee Aquino

Nina Lee Aquino is a renowned Filipino Canadian director, dramaturg, artistic leader, teacher, and mentor. She previously served as Artistic Director at Cahoots Theatre (2009–2012) and Factory Theatre (2012–2022). Currently, Nina is the Artistic Director of the National Arts Centre English Theatre. She edited the country’s first two-volume Asian Canadian play anthology and co-edited the award-winning inaugural book on Asian Canadian theatre. In addition, she holds an adjunct professorship at York University's Theatre Department and serves on the board of directors for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres. Her numerous accolades include the Canada Council for the Arts’ John Hirsch Prize for Directing, the Toronto Theatre Critics Award for Best Director, the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Margo Bindhart and Rita Davies Cultural Leadership Award, and three Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Direction.

Nina Lee Aquino est une metteuse en scène, conseillère dramaturgique, directrice artistique, pédagogue et mentore d’origine philippino-canadienne. Directrice artistique du Cahoots Theatre de 2009 à 2012 et du Factory Theatre de 2012 à 2022, elle occupe actuellement le poste de directrice artistique du Théâtre anglais du Centre national des Arts. Elle a dirigé la publication des deux tomes de la toute première anthologie de pièces canado-asiatiques et a codirigé celle d’un premier ouvrage primé sur le théâtre canado-asiatique. Elle occupe également un poste de professeure associée au Département de théâtre de l’Université York et siège au conseil d’administration de l’Association professionnelle des théâtres canadiens. Parmi les nombreuses récompenses qui lui ont été décernées, mentionnons le prix John-Hirsch de mise en scène du Conseil des arts du Canada, un Toronto Theatre Critics Award pour la meilleure mise en scène, le prix de leadership culturel Margo Binhardt et Rita Davies de la Toronto Arts Foundation ainsi que trois prix Dora Mavor Moore pour la meilleure mise en scène.

Associate Producer, Artistic Programming and Environmental Projects Judi Pearl

A passionate environmentalist since her early teens, Judi is thrilled with her newly expanded role as Associate Producer, Artistic Programming and Environmental Projects for English Theatre. Judi is also a Co-founder and the former Operations Lead at SCALE (Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency), a non-profit network of artists, cultural practitioners, and arts organisations committed to addressing the climate emergency, founded in 2021. At the NAC, she has produced projects such as Grand Acts of Theatre, Stages of Transformation, the NAC Hip Hop Theatre Festival, the annual ceremony for the Siminovitch Prize (2016-2020) and Family Day (2011-2015), among many others. She was the recipient of the CEO’s Award of Excellence in 2020. She formerly served on the boards of The Only Animal and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, and is grateful to live and work on unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory, nestled between two waterways.

Jeune adolescente, Judi était déjà une environnementaliste passionnée. Occupant depuis longtemps le poste de productrice associée, Programmation artistique au sein du Théâtre anglais, elle a déjà siégé aux conseils d’administration de The Only Animal et de la Professional Association of Canadian Theatres. Elle est aussi cofondatrice et ex-responsable de l’exploitation de l’organisme LeSAUT (Leadership Sectoriel des Arts sur l’Urgence de la Transition écologique), un réseau à but non lucratif fondé en 2021 et composé d’artistes, de spécialistes de la culture et d’organisations artistiques cherchant à s’attaquer à la crise climatique.

Ric Knowles has over 40 years experience as a director and dramaturge at theatres ranging from Mulgrave Road to the Stratford Festival. Selected highlights include Lion in the Streets (Tarragon), The Unplugging and Monster (Factory), Hallaj and The Death of the King (Modern Times), Body 13, Amal, and Qana (MT Space), A Taste of Empire and The Wanderers (Cahoots), The Bell (GOAT Collective), Bullfinch's Mythology (Tottering Biped), I Don't Know (Theatre Mada), Besbouss (Pleiades), and Chocolate Woman Dreams the Milky Way (Chocolate Woman Collective). Ric is a member of LMDA Canada.

Climate Dramaturg Vicki Stroich

Vicki Stroich is honoured to live and work on the unceded, traditional territories of the of the Secwépemc Nation and the Syilx Okanagan Nation in the North Okanagan after joining the Caravan Farm Theatre team as Artistic and Environmental Programs Manager. Vicki is a dramaturg, nonprofit leader and community builder with over 25 years of experience. Designing and hosting creative spaces and fostering collaboration are Vicki’s great passions. Prior to joining Caravan Farm Theatre full time, Vicki was based in Calgary and worked for Alberta Ecotrust and Alberta Theatre Projects. She also works with a range of artists and organizations as a dramaturg and facilitator. She has a BFA Drama from University of Calgary and an Extension Certificate in Social Innovation and Changemaking from Mount Royal University. She is a Board Member for the Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts and Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. Vicki has received a Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Achievement for her work on new Canadian plays.

Aujourd’hui responsable des programmes artistiques et environnementaux pour le Caravan Farm Theatre, Vicki Stroich a l’honneur de vivre et de travailler sur les territoires traditionnels non cédés des Nations Secwépemc et Syilx Okanagan, dans l’Okanagan-Nord. Volume 1 Ottawa 2044

An NAC English Theatre / NAC Digital Experiences and Design Co-production

In September 2023, we asked emerging local playwrights to walk through their neighbourhoods and offer possible futures in the form of a radio play. Over the past several months, the selected playwrights have been working closely with Climate Dramaturg Vicki Stroich and Dramaturg Ric Knowles to help them bend their narratives towards more imaginative ideas of climate justice.

Playwright Sanita Fejzić
Playwright Sanita Fejzić

Sanita Fejzić is a playwright, poet, and novelist. Her first play, Blissful State of Surrender, premiered at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in 2022. A year later, Sanita produced Why Worry About Their Futures at the undercurrents festival, a tryptic that included her short play, “Expecting.” Sanita is planting the seeds for an artistic movement she calls Peasant Futurisms. Peasant Futurisms challenges how we understand ourselves and our place in the world by attending to our relationships to land, food, and community.

Sanita lives in Vanier, Ottawa, the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people. She is originally from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a child, she spent her summers on her grandparents’ peasant homesteads, and is the first generation in her family born in the city.

Sanita Fejzić est dramaturge, poète et romancière. Sa première pièce, Blissful State of Surrender (en anglais seulement) a été créée par la Great Canadian Theatre Company en 2022. Un an plus tard, elle a produit Why Worry About Their Futures (en anglais seulement) au festival undercurrents, un triptyque comprenant sa courte pièce Expecting. Sanita Fejzić sème les graines d’un mouvement artistique qu’elle nomme « futurismes paysans » (Peasant Futurisms). Ce mouvement remet en question notre vision de nous-mêmes et de notre place dans le monde en se penchant sur notre relation à la terre, à la nourriture et à la communauté.

Sanita Fejzić vit dans le quartier Vanier d’Ottawa, territoire traditionnel non cédé de la Nation anishinabe algonquine. Elle est originaire de Sarajevo, en Bosnie-Herzégovine. Enfant, elle passait ses étés sur les terres paysannes de ses grands-parents, et elle est de la première génération familiale à être née en ville.

Playwright Lily Polowin
Playwright Lily Polowin

Originally trained in classical piano, Lily is a communications and marketing strategist and loves crafting thoughtful and meaningful writing, whether for art of business. She first got a taste for the thrill of backstage while serving as piano accompanist for musical production. She currently finds great satisfaction in performing as a soprano in the Capital Chamber Choir, which led her back to the theatre in 2023 as a member of the chorus / cast for the NAC Dance’s production of Gregory Maqoma and Thuthuka Sibisi’s Broken Chord.

She believes the climate crisis calls on all of us, no matter our position in society, to stretch beyond our assumed limits to find new ways of living, expressing, and envisioning ourselves. She is grateful to the NAC for the opportunity to participate in this theatre-making project as an emerging playwright. She hopes that this project can be an impetus for everyday citizens to figure out what role they want to play in fixing our broken world. She is a proudly bilingual anglophone Quebecoise living in Val-Tetreau, Hull.

D’abord pianiste classique de formation, Lily Polowin est aujourd’hui stratège en communications et marketing. Elle prend plaisir à rédiger des textes éloquents et réfléchis, pour le milieu de l’art comme pour celui des affaires. Ayant eu la piqûre des coulisses en tant que pianiste-accompagnatrice pour une production musicale, elle se produit avec bonheur comme soprano au sein du Capital Chamber Choir, ce qui l’a ramenée à fouler les scènes en 2023 en tant que membre du chœur et de la distribution pour Broken Chord de Gregory Maqoma et Thuthuka Sibisi, une production de Danse CNA.

Elle est d’avis que la crise climatique nous pousse tous et toutes, quelle que soit notre position dans la société, à dépasser nos limites supposées pour trouver de nouvelles manières de vivre, de nous exprimer et de nous imaginer. Elle remercie le CNA de lui donner l’occasion de participer à ce projet théâtral en tant que dramaturge de la relève. Elle espère que ce projet pourra donner aux membres du public l’élan nécessaire pour trouver le rôle qu’ils et elles souhaitent jouer dans la restauration de notre monde détraqué. Québécoise anglophone fièrement bilingue, elle vit à Val-Tétreau (Hull).

Playwright Seth Thomson
Playwright Seth Thomson

Seth Thomson is an Ottawa-based creative technologist and theatre creator. They are a producer at the Youth Infringement Festival, which makes theatre accessible for youth aged 16 - 25. Their creative work has been supported by the Digital Artists Resource Centre and presented at OFFTA, Zones Théâtrales and the Fresh Meat festival. Recent credits include lighting for Trip The Light Theatre's Nuit as well as digital development for Cabine, an immersive site-specific experience set inside a phone booth.

Seth Thomson est technologue de création et artiste de théâtre à Ottawa, et responsable de la production pour le Festival Youth Infringement, dont le mandat est de rendre le théâtre accessible aux jeunes de 16 à 25 ans. Son travail créatif a bénéficié du soutien du Digital Arts Resource Centre et a été présenté au OFFTA, aux Zones Théâtrales et au festival Fresh Meat. Récemment, Seth Thomson a créé les éclairages pour Nuit du Trip the Light Theatre et a pris en charge le développement numérique pour Cabine, une expérience immersive se déroulant dans une cabine téléphonique.

Playwright Kel MacDonald

Kel MacDonald is a performance and media artist based in Ottawa, ON. Recent credits include props building for the National Arts Centre, and artistic creations with The Precariat, Skeleton Key Theatre, Fresh Meat Festival, and DARC. Kel’s work is supported by the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council, University of Ottawa, and the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.

Volume 2 Walking on Water

An NAC English Theatre / NAC Orchestra / NAC Digital Experiences and Design Co-production

For the second volume of Irresistible Neighbourhoods, English Theatre and the NAC Orchestra joined forces as part of the NAC SPHERE Festival to present Walking on Water, an intriguing double bill of live radio dramas offering glimpses of imagined futures for two neighbourhoods in Canada, and their evolving relationship with water.

Playwrights David Yee from Toronto and Berni Stapleton from Newfoundland and Labrador, 2023 Siminovitch Prize laureate and nominee, respectively, collaborated with composers Chris Thornborrow and Duane Andrews to craft compelling stories about their selected Canadian locales. As climate challenges prompt us to shift our thinking from ‘what is’ to ‘what if,’ these gifted artists share hopeful visions for their communities, inviting us to consider what might make our own neighbourhoods… irresistible.

These audio commissions were recorded in front of a live audience, radio play style, featuring actors, musicians and live foley sound effects. Join us on a journey through the places we call home, where the first step in creating regenerative futures is having the courage to imagine them.

Playwright David Yee

Playwright David Yee

David Yee is a mixed race (half Chinese, half Scottish) playwright and actor, born and raised in Toronto. He is the co-founding Artistic Director of fu-GEN Theatre Company, Canada’s premiere professional Asian Canadian theatre company. A Dora Mavor Moore Award nominated actor and playwright, his work has been produced internationally and at home. He is a two-time Governor General’s Literary Award nominee for his plays lady in the red dress and carried away on the crest of a wave, which won the award in 2015 along with the Carol Bolt Award in 2013. In 2023 he was named Laureate of the prestigious Siminovitch Prize in Theatre for his groundbreaking work in playwriting. He currently teaches playwriting at the University of Toronto and works extensively in the Asian Canadian community as an artist and an advocate.

David Yee est un dramaturge et acteur d’ascendance mixte (chinoise et écossaise) originaire de Toronto. Il est le directeur artistique et le co-fondateur de la fu-GEN Theatre Company, une illustre compagnie de théâtre professionnelle canado-asiatique. Finaliste aux prix Dora Mavor Moore pour son travail d’auteur et de comédien, il a vu ses œuvres présentées au Canada et partout dans le monde. Composer Chris Thornborrow

Chris Thornborrow is an award-winning composer for film, theatre, and the concert stage. His work has been described as “heightened and brashly percussive” (Variety), “urgent, masterful” (NOW Magazine), “powerfully virtuosic” (Barcza Blog), and “elegiac music that casts a spell” (Hollywood Reporter). Recognition for his work includes the Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music, multiple SOCAN Awards for Audio Visual Composers.

Chris has established himself as a leading voice in contemporary opera and theatre. Highlights include Hook Up, a critically acclaimed hybrid-musical opera exploring issues surrounding drinking and rape culture on university campuses, which was nominated for the Dora Award, Outstanding New Opera. He also was the sound designer, music producer, arranger, and soundtrack composer of the massive site-specific work Brantwood, which won the 2015 Audience Choice Dora Award. He has co-created over sixty original opera productions with the Canadian Opera Company and young people across the Greater Toronto Area. As an Arts Educator, his programs with the COC, Canadian Children’s Opera Company, the Gryphon Trio, and Continuum Contemporary Ensemble have impacted thousands of students.

Chris’s music has been performed by Array Music, Brantford Symphony, Ensemble Paramirabo, Esprit Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic, junctQìn keyboard collective, Thin Edge, Toronto Symphony New Creations, TorQ Percussion, and the Toy Piano Composers.

Chris Thornborrow est un compositeur primé ayant travaillé pour le cinéma, le théâtre et la scène. Ses œuvres ont été qualifiées « [d’]exaltées et triomphalement percussives » (Variety), « [d’]urgentes et magistrales » (NOW), « d’une virtuosité puissante » (barczablog) et de « musique élégiaque et envoûtante » (Hollywood Reporter). Playwright Berni Stapleton

Berni Stapleton is a playwright, author, skit-artist, and actor. She was born in North West River, Labrador and grew up on the south coast of Newfoundland. She has spent her career making beautiful theatre in unexpected places. She was a Siminovitch Playwright Prize finalist in 2023. She is the recipient of the prestigious Rhonda Payne Award for Theatre. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Girl Power Inc. an indie feminist theatre company devoted to the queer-hands and creators of the outer reaches. She has had almost forty plays professionally produced. Her plays include Offensive to Some, first developed as part of the NAC’s English Theatre Program the Playwright’s Circle in 1996. It is produced regularly to this day. The Antidote for Life: Memory, Madness and Beagles, is an autobiographical exploration of madness in the arts. New works in progress include the feminist queer imagining Ophelia Swims and the upcoming podcast The Haunted Doorbell. Berni was writer-in-residence at Memorial University in 2019 and has taught an Introduction to Playwrighting course there. Her books include Love, Life, with Breakwater Books, the newest yet unpublished Brazil Square about the once iconic boarding house district of St. John’s, and the writing guide How to Write a Play and Have Fun Without Hardly Even Trying or How to Finish Your Best Worst First Draft or Prepare to Throw the Pasta. She lives in St. John’s with rescue beagles Georgie Girl and Tiggy Duff.

Composer Duane Andrews

Composer Duane Andrews

Duane Andrews is a noted composer/arranger as well as a recording/touring musician whose music is a product of an adventurous spirit and a love of music that is beyond category.

His recordings have won numerous awards and have led him around the world touring from his home in St. John's, Newfoundland to Tasmania, Australia with stops in between on stages such as the Newport Folk and Montreal Jazz festivals.

He sharpened his composing skills at the Conservatoire International de Paris and the CNR in Marseilles, France studying with Georges Boeuf. Since then, his compositions have found home in a diverse range of contexts including a variety of award-winning films which have screened at such events as the Toronto and Cannes Film Festivals.

Duane Andrews est un compositeur et arrangeur de renom ainsi qu’un musicien de studio et de tournée. Ses œuvres, produit d’un esprit aventurier et d’un amour de la musique inclassable, ont été couronnées à maintes reprises et l’ont mené en tournée autour du monde, de sa ville natale de St. John’s (Terre-Neuve) à la Tasmanie (Australie), en passant par le Festival folk de Newport et le Festival de jazz de Montréal.

Duane Andrews a perfectionné son art au Conservatoire international de musique de Paris et au Conservatoire national de région de Marseille, étudiant auprès de Georges Bœuf. Depuis, ses compositions ont été utilisées dans divers contextes, notamment dans plusieurs films primés qui ont été présentés lors d’événements aussi prestigieux que les festivals de Toronto et de Cannes.
