BOUNDLESS RANGE OF MUSIC, DANCE AND THEATRE
NAC Orchestra, Dance, NAC Presents, English Theatre and Théâtre français announce their 2019-2020 seasons!

March 16, 2019 – OTTAWA (Canada) – As the National Arts Centre continues to celebrate 50 years of delivering the best in the performing arts in 2019, we look ahead to the excitement of the future, entering a new decade in 2020 with a season reflecting a rapidly changing nation.

The boundless range of the 2019-2020 NAC seasons of music, dance and theatre will present exciting classics and Canadian premieres, featuring our brightest stars as well as our most promising new talent. With live performance flourishing worldwide, experiencing our national artists on the national stage has never been more vital.

On any given night, there is a joyous buzz coming from our performance halls: the acclaimed NAC Orchestra enchants in Southam Hall, while a contemporary dance company defies gravity. The transported audiences of our Théâtre français and English Theatre rise for standing ovations, as an up-and-coming indie band strikes their first chord in our intimate Fourth Stage.

The 2019-2020 season will offer the full gamut of Canada’s performing arts.

Highlights include concerts saluting women in music such as Gabriela Montero and Clara Schumann, as well as Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood, under the baton of NAC Music Director Alexander Shelley; a new production of the classic tale The Neverending Story, directed by NAC English Theatre Artistic Director Jillian Keiley; an exciting new work based on the life of singer Patti Smith with Parce que la nuit, co-created and directed by Théâtre français Artistic Director Brigitte Haentjens; NAC Presents highlights Canadian performers such as Jeremy Dutcher and Chilly Gonzales; and Dance delivers a wide scope of styles and talent such as Nederlands Dans Theater and Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of The Wizard of Oz.

The 2019-2020 seasons of Dance, Theatre and Music will also feature several collaborations with the much-anticipated NAC Indigenous Theatre, presenting such renowned artists as Buffy Sainte-Marie, Susan Aglukark, Dancers of Damelahamid and the work of Marie Clements. NAC Indigenous Theatre will announce their inaugural season this spring.

From stage to stage and throughout our expansive new halls, the National Arts Centre aims to represent the boundless breadth of artistic expression.

Subscribers can renew their Fixed Series subscriptions as of March 16^th and their Create Your Own subscriptions as of April 24^th.  New subscriptions can be purchased as of May 24^th. Single tickets for the majority of programming will go on sale June 20th.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE

The National Arts Centre collaborates with artists and arts organizations across Canada to help create a national stage for the performing arts, and acts as a catalyst for performance, creation and learning across the country. Founded on June 2, 1969, the National Arts Centre is celebrating its 50^th anniversary in 2019 with an array of special programming and activities throughout the year.  A home for Canada’s most creative artists, the NAC strives to be artistically adventurous in each of its programming streams – the NAC Orchestra, English Theatre, French Theatre, Dance and NAC Presents. NAC Indigenous Theatre will begin its first season of programming in the fall of 2019. The NAC’s National Creation Fund invests up to $3 million of privately raised funds every year in 15 to 20 ambitious new works by Canadian artists and arts organizations. The NAC building has recently undergone two extensive renewal projects, generously funded by the Government of Canada, that have re-oriented the NAC to the city; allowed the NAC to become more welcoming and accessible; and returned its performance halls and production facilities to contemporary standards. The NAC is at the forefront of youth and educational activities, offering artist training, programs for children and youth, and resources for teachers in communities across Canada. The NAC is also a pioneer in new media, showcasing the performing arts across the country through the Kipnes Lantern, the largest transparent LED installation in North America; using technology to teach students and young artists around the globe; creating top-rated podcasts; and providing a wide range of NAC Orchestra concerts on demand. The NAC is the only bilingual, multidisciplinary performing arts centre in Canada, and one of the largest in the world.
