As Presenting Sponsor of the 2023 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards, RBC is once again showing its commitment to Canada’s emerging artists through the establishment of a new award.
The inaugural RBC Emerging Artist Award will recognize Ralph Escamillan, a queer, Canadian-Filipinx performance artist, teacher and community leader based in Vancouver, British Columbia. With his company FakeKnot, he creates work that strives to understand the complexities of identity using sound, costume, technology and the body.
Ralph was the chosen recipient from among 13 candidates in a selection process conducted by a committee of artistic leaders based on eligibility, merit, and impact on the community.
“Success in the arts is heavily influenced by the wealth, resources, and cultural capital an individual has access to, and receiving this award uplifts the hard work of artists who don’t have that same access,” said Ralph.
Jayne Watson, CEO of the National Arts Centre Foundation shared, “RBC’s support of emerging artists across Canada is unmatched. We are honoured that as Presenting Sponsor, RBC has incorporated this important award into the GGPAA. It gives us more to celebrate!”
There is still time for you to celebrate Ralph Escamillan and the recipients of the 2023 GGPAA with us on Saturday, May 27. Buy your tickets today!
