The truth of this land is continuing to be unearthed, truth I've known my whole life, told in parts, passed down through my family around kitchen tables and cups of tea. After the news from Kamloops at the beginning of the summer, some days it was hard to get out of bed. This is the story of one of those days.
“My family is Swampy Cree from the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation and our traditional territory is along the Churchill River in North West Manitoba and my Irish-setler roots trace back to county Cork, Ireland. I myself was born and raised and create art in Tkaronto, the land of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Haundenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat First Nation. When I speak the names of Nations and peoples of this land, I also acknowledge our fight against ongoing colonial violence and honour my ancestors who made it possible for me to use my voice today. We are still here.” – Brefny Caribou
