Uvattini (which means “home” in Inuktitut) blends music, narration, video and performance to imagine a space where past and present merge, evoking bittersweet memories and raw emotions. Through her performance, directed by Émilie Monnet, Elisapie guides the audience through her own territory, delivering a musical and sensory experience where rock and pop classics translated into Inuktitut provide a platform for the intimate projection of personal history and subjective and collective pain. Documentary and poetic, Uvattini invites listeners to see and feel what the North and the Inuit who live there are all about. At times, the performance resembles a sacred ritual conveyed through striking musical arrangements, spellbinding lighting effects, and filmed images that transform our perspectives and points of view on the world.

Featuring Elisapie

Elisapie’s unconditional attachment to her territory and her language, Inuktitut, is central to her creative journey. Born in Salluit, a Nunavik village accessible only by plane, the Inuk singer–songwriter and activist has become a key figure on the Canadian cultural scene. Having won her first JUNO in 2005 with her group Taima, Elisapie has gone on to win numerous awards for her artistic achievements. Her 2018 album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize, won several Félix Awards, and was nominated for a JUNO. Since then, the Inuk artist has performed with Montréal’s Orchestre Métropolitain at the invitation of conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, given a concert at the SummerStage Festival in Central Park, performed at the National Public Radio offices as part of the network’s Tiny Desk concert series, and appeared at numerous venues and festivals around the world. Backed by some of the best musicians on Montréal’s indie and folk scene, Elisapie highlights Inuit culture through her sensitive blend of modernity and tradition.

L’attachement inconditionnel d’Elisapie à son territoire et à sa langue, l’inuktitut, se situe au cœur de son parcours créatif. Née à Salluit, un village du Nunavik uniquement accessible par avion, l’auteure-compositrice-interprète et activiste inuk est aujourd’hui une figure incontournable de la scène culturelle canadienne. Ayant remporté son premier prix JUNO en 2005 avec son groupe Taima, Elisapie a été reconnue à de nombreuses reprises pour ses différentes créations artistiques. Lancé en 2018, son album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl a été retenu sur la courte liste du prix Polaris, lui a valu de nombreux prix Félix et a reçu une nomination aux prix JUNO. Depuis, l’artiste inuk s’est produite avec l’Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal à l’invitation de Yannick Nézet-Séguin, a donné un concert au SummerStage Festival à Central Park, a offert une prestation dans les bureaux de NPR dans le cadre de sa propre session Tiny Desk, et s’est produite dans une multitude de salles et de festivals à travers le monde. Toujours entourée de la fine fleur des scènes indie et folk montréalaises, Elisapie fait résonner la culture inuite avec finesse en conjuguant modernité et tradition.
