Continuance is the state of remaining in existence.
Continuance as a Grand Act is an embodiment of resilience. A celebration of Indigenous continuance the drive-in theatre shines light, 3D mapping on the dark oppressiveness of the Mohawk Institute Residential School.
With an immersive interplay with live intergenerational Haudenosaunee performers, the new media incorporates ancient-future imagery illuminating that the 142-year history of the school did not destroy cultural perpetuity. Disintegrating the facade of the school into images portraying cultural strength, beauty and iconic Haudenosaunee imagery. Coded within our iconographies are meaningful ways to live in the world with balanced harmony.
Continuance was performed for a live audience on Saturday, October 3, 2020 in Six Nations, ON. This live performance adheres to the health and safety guidelines of the region in which it was recorded.

Creative Producer, Director, Performer: Santee Smith
Santee Smith / Tekaronhiáhkhwa is a multidisciplinary artist from the Kahnyen’kehàka Nation, Turtle Clan, Ohswé:ken/Six Nations of the Grand River. Transformation, energetic exchange and fostering mind-heart connections through performance and design is her lifelong work. Santee trained at Canada’s National Ballet School; holds Physical Education and Psychology degrees from McMaster University and a M.A. in Dance from York University.
Premiering her first production Kaha:wi – a family creation story in 2004, one year later she founded Kaha:wi Dance Theatre which has grown into an internationally renowned company. Santee’s work speaks about identity, teachings and way of life within Onkwehonwe:neha, creativity and Indigenous artistic process. She is a sought-after teacher and speaker on the performing arts, Indigenous performance, and culture.
Smith is faculty at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity’s World Indigenous Dance Residency 2024 and curator and visionary of Inviting the Land to Shape Us series of land-based workshops and creation labs focused on Indigenous performance research.
Recently, she premiered Dora Award nominated multimedia production SKéN:NEN at TOLive 2024 and toured award-winning The Mush Hole embodying the truths of Canada’s oldest and standing Indian Residential School, The Mohawk Institute.
Santee Smith / Tekaronhiáhkhwa est une artiste multidisciplinaire kahnyen’kehàka du clan de la Tortue des Six Nations de la rivière Grand (Ohswé:ken, Ontario). Depuis le début de sa carrière, elle s’intéresse à la transformation, à l’échange d’énergie et aux liens entre le cœur et l’esprit. Formée à l’École nationale de ballet du Canada, elle est titulaire de diplômes en éducation physique et en psychologie de l’Université McMaster ainsi que d’une maîtrise en danse de l’Université York.
Elle présente sa première œuvre, Kaha:wi, un récit de création familial, en 2004. Un an plus tard, elle fonde la troupe Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, dont la renommée est devenue internationale. Son travail porte sur l’identité, les enseignements et le mode de vie de l’Onkwehonwe’néha, la créativité et les pratiques artistiques autochtones. Elle est en outre une enseignante et une conférencière recherchée dans le domaine des arts du spectacle, de la culture et des arts de la scène autochtones.
Elle fait partie de l’équipe d’encadrement du programme d’artiste en résidence (danse autochtone) du Centre des arts de Banff. Elle est également la programmatrice et la visionnaire de la série d’ateliers « Inviter la terre à nous façonner » et des laboratoires de création sur la recherche dans le domaine des arts du spectacle autochtones.
Récemment, elle a présenté pour la première fois à TO Live SKéN:NEN, une production multimédia finaliste aux prix Dora, et accompagné en tournée l’équipe de la pièce primée The Mush Hole relatant les expériences des pensionnaires de l’Institut Mohawk – le plus ancien pensionnat autochtone au Canada.
